Patterns of Conflict, Paths to Peace
Welcome to The Legacy Website of the IPRA2006 Conference held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, June 29 to July 3, 2006
Thanks to All Who Helped Make IPRA2006 a Success

IPRA wishes especially to thank the organisations who gave grants to facilitate the participation of many from developing and transition countries. We are exceedingly grateful for the generous support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the International Development and Research Centre (IDRC), and the IPRA Foundation for securing a truly international dialogue and arena for networking.

Just as we had hoped, the IPRA2006 Calgary Conference proved to be that rare opportunity for Calgary's rich and diverse communities to showcase colourful perspectives on peace. Calgary did in fact become a place for exchanging our cultural experience and learning through engagement with dynamic educators, researchers, artists and peace enthusiasts from around the world. From the expert plenaries, keynote speakers, and scores of commission sessions, attended by international delegates and local enthusiasts the conference met it goals. The billeting of many people from overseas in Calgary homes helped facilitate the trading of ideas and experiences for which we had hoped and planned. IPRA-Foundation Chair Ian Harris spoke on "The Power of Love and Non-Violence" at Calgary's MustardSeed Mission to a group of that organization's Storefront--university entrance program for homeless and economically impoverished Calgarians.

This June/July 2006 gathering near the traditional place for peaceful trade amongst Alberta's divergent Aboriginal peoples -- the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers -- not only allowed local residents and international scholars alike to trade ideas and experiences it also encouraged the words and artistry of contemporary Aboriginals. The program was constructed to feature and celebrate dedicated and humble speakers like Doreen Spence, as well as the spiritual and traditional drummers and dancers of Alberta who are world-renowned for their agility, grace and resplendent colour.

Call for Papers

IPRA2006 - Far From Over Yet. One legacy many of us would like to leave for IPRA2008 is a broad collection of conference papers and presentations and perhaps taping the ten best as judged by those who attended the conference.

For those who "missed the bus". The other concern is to provide a forum not only for those who gave papers but to those who by force of circumstance were unable to attend and make their presentation. So if you fall within these categories, please do send us your paper in electronic form.

LATEST NEWS

September 20, 2007 - We draw your attention to the new conference website IPRA2008 to be held in Louven, Belgium in July 15-19, 2008. In the meantime, we continue to have visitors to this fine collection of papers from the 2006 IPRA Conference in Calgary. In point of fact, 10 to 30 visitors per month continue to search out papers on this site. We are grateful to all those who have submitted presentations to us.

The latest addition is a post-conference paper by Vinay K. Jain entitled "Elements of Sustainable Peaceful World Progress" which you will find under the Indigenous Peoples Rights Commission (IPRC).

September 19, 2007 - The IPRA Foundation whose function is to award grants for peace research and underwrite travel costs for scholars to attend IPRA conferences has a new website. Ian Harris, the Chair of the Foundation Board, invites proposals for funding of $1000 to $3000 US. Proposals are juried by current and past Board members who represent a broad international community.

The refresh button looks like this    Updates hiding on you?
There is a flaw in Microsoft browsers that is bothersome when a site is updating information a lot. Your computer stores all the pages of your previous visits to all sites and prefers them rather than the latest page. (This is to speed up your access time, but unfortunately it doesn't check time-stamps.) If you suspect there is newer information than you see, especially if you are visiting the site again on the same day, then click the "Refresh" button in the upper left of the screen once or twice and you'll get the new page. This is a handy trick everywhere on the internet.
